Started a Bitcoin online store, and offered BTC as a payment option at a craft show in NYC last weekend. My story.
Hi Reddit! My name is Alison and I wanted to tell you about my experience with Bitcoin as a semi latecomer to BTC and a business owner of Dirty Ass Soaps. I first heard of Bitcoin when it was around $14 USD. I was interested in it as far as an alternate currency (as I am familiar with Ithaca Hours and BerkShares) but didn't really think anything of it until I heard it went to $27 USD. My boyfriend at the time (now husband) tried mining for a day, and didn't get anything so we kinda gave up. (/facepalm). Bitcoin kept growing and growing. After a couple years, I was chatting with a tech friend of mine, who lives/works in the South Bay of San Francisco. He suggested, since I have a small business making unique soaps and bath care products, if I ever put much thought into actually taking Bitcoin as payment. This kinda floored me, because I never really considered it, I always thought about buying Bitcoin but never taking it as a payment option, and with Bitcoin reaching towards $800, I couldn't even justify buying more than a small percentage. So, I talked it over with my husband and my friend, and we agreed to open a BitDazzle store just to see how it would go. We moved some of our soap listings over from our Square Market account, and are in the process of offering a dual virtual storefront (think: late 90's/early 00's splash pages which let you choose between Flash or HTML -- but in our case, Bitcoin or credit card) We got our store up and running, listed our shop on Bitcoin Black Friday, and got two sales! I literally was jumping up and down with excitement once I got the notifications on my phone. It was magical. (: Last week, we were getting ready for our last big craft show of the season (BUST Holiday Craftacular in NYC) when we decided to offer the option of taking Bitcoin for soaps. We downloaded Blockchain on our phones and also printed out some signage and QR codes for our wallet. As soon as the show started and people started pouring in, I overheard several people exclaim, "oh my god, they take Bitcoin here!" That made my entire weekend. We had about 20-25 people ask us personally about Bitcoin, and we answered as best as we could. We told them about Coinbase and Blockchain, about BitDazzle and Bitcoin Black Friday, about the market fluctuations and about our experience with taking Bitcoin for our soaps. We unfortunately didn't make any Bitcoin sales over the weekend, mostly because people said they actually didn't have any Bitcoin to use, but if they did, they would buy our soaps with BTC. A lot of them did buy stuff with USD, though, which was rad! One posh guy even asked for any Bitcoin literature we had, but we said he could google it because all we had with us was our signage and our printed QR codes which linked to our wallet. We didn't print them to hand them out, but because we had our store name Dirty Ass Soaps along with Bitcoin and the QR code on the paper, he was super thrilled when we gave it to him. He said his friend was into Bitcoin and he himself looked like he walked out of Wall Street, so I just guessed that maybe his friend invested in BTC early on and that the guy was looking to get into it as well. Kinda cool. I also got a chance to make friends with a half dozen other vendors, and in our conversations I brought up taking BTC for soaps and opening up the BitDazzle store. I'm pretty sure at least 3 of them are considering doing the same, which will be rad to have more people in on BTC (and more options for me to spend Bitcoins, because their stuff is really awesome!) Oh, one thing we noticed a lot of -- several people come up to us and asked us to show them what a Bitcoin looks like. Lol. We had to explain that Bitcoin is to physical money like email is to physical mail. They completely understood with that analogy. (:
And if you happen to be a procrastinator with getting gifts like we are, just as a heads up we are taking orders until Thursday for Christmas delivery. (shameless self promotion!) Also, AMA. TL;DR - Always kinda interested in BTC, started taking BTC via an online store for my kickass soaps, and my experiences with attempting to sell with BTC at a famous craft show in NYC. Also, shameless plug and eyecandy photos.
Hello! My name is Julle and I'm a Bitcoin Fan since 2013. 15 at that time. I've recognized a problem that we have worldwide...Online stores that Accept Bitcoins. (Of course I know that there are some atm.) I've always wanted to set up my online store and I'm soon finished and I'm looking for some feedback. (Basically you will be able to buy electronics, clothing, accessories etc with Bitcoin.) I'm feeling that I'm not currently ready to put this store online yet. Because I would like to get some feedback on what you would like to be able to buy on this site etc. I'm not doing this post as an AD Just some feedback... If you are interested in giving some response about the website. Shoot me a PM or answer this thread and I will contact you! Thanks! Sincerely, uBitShop Julle
WARNING! Do NOT buy anything Bitcoin or Cryptocurrency related with the Apple Card.
It's against the terms to buy cryptocurrency, but what is not mentioned is that THEY WILL CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT FOR BUYING ANY TYPE OF CRYPTOCURRENCY MERCHANDISE. I purchased t-shirts and hardware items from a Bitcoin online store, and 2 days later the card was closed with absolutely no way to reopen it even after explaining it was merchandise.
The holidays are just around the corner. Prepping some fun #Bitcoin & #altcoin themed Christmas Cards for my @zazzle online store. Hope you like the new designs 🎁💌 https://www.mammycrypto.com/2020/10/holiday-crypto-bitcoin-greeting-cards.html
Once again, I just want to share how easily you can accept bitcoin on your online store, or even create a store that ONLY accepts bitcoin, like I did
It's easier than ever to accept bitcoin on your online store. Many popular platforms such as WooCommerce and shopify have plug in and play solutions, there's no excuse to not accept it and it doesn't cost you anything to do so! I've managed to put together a slightly hasty game store that now solely accepts bitcoin, I'd love to know what you think, it's still very WIP but it's a great proof of concept. https://www.ninjagamekeys.com TODO:
I found a website where you get Bitcoin almost free of charge. Have tested it myself and it's just great. Kommandostore - My favorite online military surplus store now accepts bitcoin
I'll admit, I'm a bit of a mall ninja myself. I've bought some cool stuff from kommandostore. Great shop, and they have a great sense of humor. I sent an email not too long ago asking them to add bitcoin as a payment option. They never replied, but i did just notice they accept bitcoin, so I splurged and got a few cool things for my militaria collection/survival gear collection.
10 Reasons Why Bitcoin is Better than Conventional Currency
Theft resistance: Stealing of bitcoins is not possible until the adversary have the private keys (usually kept offline) that are associated with the user wallet. In particular, Bitcoin provides security by design, for instance, unlike with credit cards you dont expose your secret (private key) whenever you make a transaction.
Btc cannot be falsified, dollars well you know When you transfer bitcoins to someone you don't hand over "a bitcoin". You submit a transaction to the network. The network makes sure your address is valid and has the proper value. So there is no risk of counterfeiting because there is nothing to counterfeit.
Durability, Portability, Divisibility, How do you destroy a number? Bitcoins are as durable as the owner makes the keys. If the only copy of the key is on a computer and you throw out the computer, the bitcoins die with the hard drive. If the proper precautions are taken, the keys are as durable as the medium. In order to destroy the network, you would need to eliminate all computers running the software. This includes the computer running in space. It is possible but unlikely.
You can just travel among different countries with millions in Btc, you just have to memorize your private key, here is where btc is much more portable than gold, cash and even bank transfers that can have several limitations. Without a way to instantly transport gold from person to person, which is impossible without some sort of incredible breakthrough resulting in teleportation, then transportation costs, or the reliance on central vaults to store the gold, remain an issue. then, the gold itself is so useful for much of the technology we rely on today, as well as technology that is being developed, that our gold supply is truly needed for industrial uses. For the first time in history, humans are actually “consuming” gold Bitcoin is infinitely divisible. Currently, 1 bitcoin can only be broken down into 100,000,000 smaller units, known as satoshis. However, that limit is not set in stone. If, at some point, more than 2,100,000,000,000,000, or 2.1 quadrillion, units of currency are needed, then it would not be difficult to allow the currency to be broken down to another decimal point or two.
It’s borderless. You could go to any country and use it. It is safer to carry bitcoins than to carry cash, especially if you bring a large amount of money or if you’re travelling to a country with higher crime rates. Bitcoin is easy to exchange to major local currencies, if you plan to travel to multiple countries and wish to avoid the hassle of exchanging money.
If the establishment doesn’t accept bitcoin payments, sell your bitcoins (through LocalBitcoins) or withdraw your money from ATMs with the help of payment cards.
It’s not subject to the whims of a government. The supply is constant and the price is determined by free market demand. We can know how many bitcoin will be circulating in ten, twenty or seventy years, for example, are you able you know how many US dollars will be circulating at that moment, or how many of your fiduciary currency will be printed?
Bitcoin transactions are instant. When a bitcoin is sent, the transaction immediately begins to spread through the network. The recipient can see that they have received the transaction instantly, or within a few seconds. Then, once it has been fully confirmed, it would be statistically improbable for it to be invalid. I would say impossible, but that is not completely true. However, after a few confirmations, you are more likely to win the lottery than have a transaction turn out to be invalid.
Secure store of value. This use case is crucial in environments where citizens cannot trust that institutions will be responsible stewards of their hard-earned money. Consider the tragic case of a country like Venezuela, where individuals’ property and savings can be confiscated by authorities through law or inflation. Many Venezuelans are unfortunately unable to access traditional forms of exit such as emigration or stealthily accruing more stable sovereign currencies. With cryptocurrency, more Venezuelans have an alternative: They can opt to purchase or mine a secure store of value that cannot be confiscated or inflated away by their government because they alone control their private keys. (Indeed, cryptocurrencies are especially popular in Venezuela for precisely this reason.)
It is also very useful to send and receive remittances without paying high fees and only with your mobile, without having to go to a money exchanger physically
Smart contracts. For example, let’s say that Alice would like to gift her granddaughter, Erin, with a sum of money upon her 18th birthday. Today, Alice’s option is basically to hire a lawyer to create a trust that will hold the funds and disburse them on the appointed date. Being a technologically-savvy grandmother, however, Alice knows that she can simply program a smart contract to do the same thing without having to employ an intermediary. Alice creates a cryptocurrency wallet for herself and another for her granddaughter Erin. Alice sends the equivalent of $10,000 to her wallet and programs a smart contract. The contract is set up so that on the day of Erin’s birthday—let’s say January 3, 2027—the contract will automatically move the funds from Alice’s wallet directly to Erin’s, where she will have complete control of those funds. Once Alice sets the transaction in motion, she no longer has access to the funds, just as if she had created a trust. (it works also for inheritances)
It’s banking the unbanked. You can bypass the traditional banking system, avoid surveillance, and get rid of hefty fees. Cryptocurrencies remove the need to rely on this trusted third party to make a transaction. In effect, a cryptocurrency replaces a third party like Bank of America or PayPal with the network itself, which is managed by a distributed web of computers all across the world. This means that Alice can make a payment online directly to Bob whenever and wherever she wants, without needing to introduce another party which may be cumbersome or expensive. This also means that people without access to banking services can now take part in digital commerce.
Programmers, developers, online teachers, designers and anyone who can do online work can benefit from this bitcoin advantage, especially in poorer countries where most people can not access international bank accounts.
Bitcoin has no risk of credit card fraud or credit card chargebacks, Compared to traditional payment methods, bitcoin is an attractive prospect for business owners, Bitcoin has no risk of credit card fraud or credit card chargebacks,This is a huge problem for the travel industry because the payments are often large.
For example, many European or American online stores block or avoid receiving credit card payments from Africa because of the fraud risks, with bitcoin, online stores could accept purchases from customers from Africa without chargeback risks, both parties win, the Buyers can access the merchandise and sellers can sell without risk.
