Fifty Years of Cypherpunk: History, Personalities, And Spread of its ideas

In this review, we tell how the ideas of cypherpunk were born, how they influenced cryptocurrencies, and modern technologies, who formed the basis and why its popularity these days has grown again.

From the early days to today: the chronology of key events of the cypherpunk

In the early 1970s, James Ellis of the UK Government Communications Center put forward the concept of public-key cryptography. In the early 1980s, small groups of hackers, mathematicians and cryptographers began working on the realization of this idea. One of them was an American cryptographer, Ph.D. David Chaum, who is sometimes called the godfather of cypherpunk. This new culture has proclaimed computer technology as a means of destroying state power and centralized management systems.Key figure among the cypherpunk of the 80s — Intel specialist Timothy C. May. His dream was to create a global system that allows anonymous exchange of information. He created the concept of the BlackNet system. In September 1988, May wrote The Crypto-Anarchist Manifesto: people themselves, without politicians, manage their lives, use cryptography, use digital currencies, and other decentralized tools. In 1989, David Chaum founded DigiCash an eCash digital money system with its CyberBucks and with the blind digital signature technology.Since 1992, Timothy May, John Gilmore (Electronic Frontier Foundation), and Eric Hughes (University of California) have begun holding secret meetings and regular PGP-encrypted mailing through anonymous remailer servers. And finally, in 1993 Eric Hughes published a fundamental document of the movement — А Cypherpunk's Manifesto. The importance of confidentiality, anonymous transactions, cryptographic protection — all these ideas were subsequently implemented in cryptocurrencies. The term "cypherpunk" was first used by hacker and programmer Jude Milhon to a group of crypto-anarchists.In 1995, Julian Assange, the creator of WikiLeaks, published his first post in cypherpunk mailing. In 1996, John Young and Deborah Natsios created the Cryptome, which published data related to security, privacy, freedom, cryptography. It is here that subsequently will be published data from the famous Edward Snowden. In 1997, cryptographer Dr. Adam Back (you know him as CEO of Blockstream) created Hashcash, a distributed anti-spam mechanism. In 1998, computer engineer Wei Dai published two concepts for creating a b-money digital payment system:
In April 2001, Bram Cohen developed the BitTorrent protocol and application. In 2002, Paul Syverson, Roger Dingledine and Nick Mathewson presented the alpha version of the anonymity network named TOR Project. In 2004, cypherpunk Hal Finney created the Reusable Proof of Work (RPoW) algorithm. It was based on Adam Back's Hashcash but its drawback was centralization. In 2005, cryptographer Nick Szabo, who developed the concept of smart contracts in the 1990s, announced the creation of Bit Gold — a digital collectible and investment item.In October 2008, legendary Satoshi Nakamoto created the manifesto “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System”, which refers to the works of the cypherpunk classics Adam Back and Wei Dai.In 2011, Ross William Ulbricht aka Dread Pirate Roberts created the Silk Road, the first major market for illegal goods and services on the darknet. In 2016, Julian Assange released the book "Cypherpunks: Freedom and the future of the Internet."At the beginning of 2018, Pavel Durov, the creator of Telegram, announced the launch of the TON multi-blockchain platform and mentioned his plans to launch TON ICO.In 2019, the Tor Project‌ introduced an open anti-censorship group.

Cypherpunk 2020

Plenty of services, products, and technologies were inspired by cypherpunk: Cryptocurrencies, HD (Hierarchical Deterministic) crypto wallets, Coin Mixers, ECDHM addresses, Privacy Coins. The ideas of distribution and anonymity were also implemented in the torrents and VPN. You can see the embodiment of cybersecurity ideas in the electronic signatures and protected messengers (Telegram, Signal, and many others). Why there were so many talks about cypherpunk this spring? In April 2020, Reddit users suggested that the letter from the famous cypherpunks mailing dated September 19, 1999, was written by Satoshi Nakamoto himself (or someone close to him). This letter is about the functioning of ecash. Anonymous (supposed Satoshi) talks about the "public double-spending database" and Wei Dai's b-money as a possible foundation for ecash. In addition, researchers of the mystery "Who is Satoshi Nakamoto?" periodically make some noise and discover the next "secret" about one or another legendary cypherpunks. So, in May 2020, Adam Back wrote in response to videos and new hype discussions that, despite some coincidences, he is not Satoshi.Other heroes of the scene are not idle too: in April 2020, David Chaum received $9.7 million during the presale of the confidential coin xx, created to encourage venture investors.

Conclusion

As you can see from the Satoshi Nakamoto's mentions and from the stories of DigiCash, Hashcash, RPoW, Bit Gold, the movement of cypherpunk influenced a lot the emergence of cryptocurrencies. As governments and corporations restrict freedom and interfere with confidentiality, cypherpunk ideas will periodically rise in popularity. And this confrontation will not end in the coming decades.

Remembering Neil

J. Neil Schulman – influential author, political commentator, producer, and philosopher – passed away on August 10, 2019. He is mourned by fans, philosophically-kindred Libertarians, friends, and the opponents who loved to debate him throughout the world. His credits ranged from a 1980's episode of the The Twilight Zone – which he quasi-"pirated" for me by sharing a YouTube link – to the book, audiobook, movie, and graphic novel Alongside Night, which was equally responsible as the advent of cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) to the emergence of new-tech worldwide free markets in the face of unprecedented government regulation.

https://preview.redd.it/ia2rdpuhsdu31.png?width=680&format=png&auto=webp&s=9d04b10a554b0b7c3e938214389d3ef7524b9471
These markets operate independent of, alongside, and within traditional online and offline markets. Many are based on the TOR network's DNS, as was the Silk Road market - the progenitor of all so-called “darknet” markets, whose founder Ross Ulbritch credited Schulman's imagining of underground free markets in Alongside Night as his inspiration. Without those markets, Bitcoin would've been obfuscated to a relative “nerd fad” among programmers and enthusiasts such as myself, rather than being the $1.2T massive economic force and tool of liberty that Bitcoin and other crypocurrencies are today. All from the mind of J. Neil Schulman and the people he inspired.
Many, if not most, major retailers have begun directly accepting cryptocurrency online and the currency has made many financial and political in-roads as a result of this success, all of which can trace its origins to Neil's imagination and writing. Like Ayn Rand and Satoshi Natamoko – Neil Schulman found a way to deal a disproportionately large blow to the worldwide invasion of international Socialism by influencing others.
In addition to being a public figure, Neil was my friend. After reading and watching Alongside Night, I wrote to Neil as a Capitalist hero, and asked him if he'd autograph a copy of his novel for a trivial amount of silver bullion. He kindly agreed and greatly over-delivered, giving me his graphic novel, DVD, and other gifts. We exchanged further messages and Neil got me to re-engage with Facebook and its Messenger, despite my resentment of its Socialist nature and agenda. Neil was supportive of me when I lost family and shared his own problems and burdens with me.

https://preview.redd.it/oa8k36snsdu31.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=dde4324bf535049e7f3075c129fb94ce67d357ff
I am incredibly lucky to have counted the great Neil Schulman as a friend, but I bitterly regret the things left undone. Neil and I looked for opportunities to help each other and collaborate, but his needs and mine were usually not immediately compatible. As the US has been becoming a more thoroughly Socialist nation, opportunities for small/independent business have dried up and anti-Socialist creative expression is strongly rebuked – support for patriotic values is now considered a threat. Still, Neil always found a way to pull it off.
Neil remained active as a political commentator on Twitter and Facebook until only days before his death. His last few days were spent in the hospital, where he died after 3 days. He had long suffered from various medical conditions while and before I knew him.

Neil in 2008
About a month before this happened I was attacked by Socialists who conspired to a particularly criminal and devastating “Townhall” at Laureate Education. As a result, I removed myself from all Socialist networks, including LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter – the channels where Neil was active. I therefore did not know when Neil's health problems became acute, or when he died. Over the past 2 months I e-mailed and otherwise attempted to contact Neil, only recently realizing what happened.
Obituaries and online tributes did not mention any real-world memorial or funeral – only that he died in Colorado Springs. I was in Colorado when I received this news. Unable to ascertain any further details, I traveled to Colorado Springs hoping to pay my respect to his grave. After much detective work, I learned that at the end of his life Neil chose to donate his body to science, i.e. to us – We, The Living.
Why? Why would the ultra-Capitalist, famous Libertarian Schulman end his life with an ultimate act of charity? I think it was because Neil Schulman loved this world. His friends and his family were the center of his life. He loved fighting to keep the Socialists at bay for them.
I only had the pleasure of knowing Neil for the 2 years of his life. He impacted me greatly. While I'll always regret not having engaged and worked more with Neil, like so many others, I know that what I do moving forward will be positively influenced by his words and ideas.

We are Darknet Solutions. We build & host darknet (TOR) sites, and we've been around the darknet for over 3 years! What an interesting journey it has been, AMA!

We are a small group of web developers that cater to the darknet (also knows as Tor or The Tor Network). We've been active for over a year and designed dozens of sites of all sizes - from markets to vendor shops, contact pages to forums.
Among other sites who's owners wish to remain private, we've designed/hosted:
Darknet Jobs - Jobs for the darknet. Also /darknetjobs CatFacts v1.0 - Darknet Cat Facts CatFacts v2.0 - Darknet Cat Facts 2nd Edition DarkNet Image Database - Image hosting site, No CP. OnionPaste 2.0 - Darknet version of Pastebin CoinPrice - Gives users the current price of bitcoins in various currency Am I Safe - Determines if users are safe with the current browseos/Tor version Hidden Service Wiki - Upcoming darknet wiki (not directory)
This is just the sites that we've been given permission to announce publicly if we want, we have many others that wish to remain private.
We have a strict no pornography rule and monitor our sites closely to prevent this from being an issue - it has not occurred, but if it does we delete the users account and files immediately.
We've done everything except build an entire public market from scratch - we have built some private markets, dozens of vendor sites, existing marketplace additions or features as well as optimization, and many of the darknet resources you'll find on /onions.
Over the last 2 years we have saw drama and mystery and suspicious like no media outlet could offer.
The last 3 years of the darknets fight with (mostly) the US government, NSA spying, TOR breaches and zero-day exploits, and even some illegal and dirty work by our own FBI to shut down the largest online blackmarkets under very suspicious conditions, at points blatantly lying to the public.
We're not here to rant about politics or markets or any thing specific, we'd just like to share what we have learned over the last 2+ years of wandering the darknet.

The Indian Ent's Guide to the DarkNetMarkets

Hello all,
This is a fellow stoner and an ent of this great country!
Lately I have come across a few Indian vendors for charas and LSD on the darknets, and many people have asked me how to use the darknet, So I am creating this thread for all of us :)
For years, people have been ordering their goodies through the internet, but never has it been safer and more trustworthy than it is now, using the darknet markets. For one, it offers security and privacy using the combined bundle of TOR, PGP and Bitcoins. Also, it offers you choice - you can read about a vendor’s reviews from other customers, and make your own well informed decisions.
I will be touching upon some of the basic topics to get you started, and will post advanced topics on a weekly basis.
TOR:
To get started, all you need is the TOR browser. This hides your IP from the sites you visit, offering complete anonymity. Using TOR is completely legal, it has legitimate users like journalists who wish to protect their privacy, whistle blowers like Snowden, Reearchers of sensitive topics, etc. The Human Rights Watch commission recommence everyone to use TOR to protect themselves against intrusion of privacy by governments.
It is easy to get started. Download & Install TOR Browser: http://torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en
Once downloaded, open the browser and it will automatically connect to the TOR network, offering you instant anonymity.
Next step is to browse a market. Now, there are several markets online at this time; However it would not be wise to trust everything you see on the darknet.
The complete list of markets is available at: https://dnstats.net/
Some of the recommended markets are Nucleus, Dream Market, DHL and Valhalla. Note: DHL is a new-age market and will become closed and an invite only market in a few days once they reach the required number of users, so get in while you can!
This is enough to get started browsing the markets! To learn how to order, keep reading!
Bitcoins: To purchase anything on the dark net, we require the darknet’s currency of choice, which is Bitcoins. All payments have to be done via bitcoins to ensure anonymity of both customer and buyer. Coins can be easily purchased though, from Localbitcoins using payment via NEFT/IMPS and even cash exchange.
https://www.localbitcoins.com
PGP
The final topic I will touch upon for now would be PGP encryption. It stands for Pretty Good Privacy. It is most important while placing an order to ensure complete encryption of personal information. Never share unencrypted information on the darknet. PGP requires both the sender and receiver to authenticate themselves in order to read and send the messages, hence offering true encryption.
Complete PGP Guides can be found at: https://www.reddit.com/DarkNetMarkets/wiki/index/pgp
Do ask all your questions to me and I will try my best to answer all of them. I will touch upon advanced topics like MultiSig and drop locations in the next few weeks!
Happy ent-ing :D

A SIMPLE GUIDE TO MIXING BITCOINS AND MAKING THEM UNTRACEABLE

A SIMPLE GUIDE TO SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY TUMBLING (MIXING) BITCOINS

📷
Bitcoin tumbling, also referred to as Bitcoin mixing or Bitcoin laundering, is the process of using a third party service to break the connection between a Bitcoin address sending coins and the address(s) they are sent to. Since the Bitcoin blockchain is a public ledger that records every transaction, mixing coins is critical for anyone who doesn’t want the entire world to know exactly where they send and store their BTC, or from where they receive it.
Properly mixing coins may seem like a daunting task to those who aren’t very familiar with Bitcoin, but it is actually a simple process that will only take a few minutes of your time for each deposit.
There are good reasons for everyone to mix their coins, but for those who use Darknet Markets in particular, it is a necessity. New tools are being built all the time to increase the ability of the public, as well as private corporations and government agencies, to follow coins through the blockchain and track those who use it. It may seem like a waste of time now, but in the near future it may be simple for anyone- including friends, relatives, employers, and law enforcement, to track every Bitcoin transaction you’ve ever made and see exactly where it ended up. Breaking the connection between your addresses and the coins’ destination by mixing them is certainly a precaution that all DNM users should take.
In this guide we attempt to provide the simplest possible step-by-step instructions to help users unfamiliar with the process of Bitcoin tumbling do so effectively. This guide assumes the reader already has a basic understand of how to send Bitcoins and how to use .onion sites.
To mix your coins using this method, you will need:
-Bitcoins, or the ability to buy them. -The Tor Browser -The ability to create new Bitcoin wallets, both via Tor and on the clear net. We recommended using Electrum, but any client that functions over Tor will work. Alternately, you could use Blockchain.info and their Tor hidden service to create all or some of your wallets.
NOTE: Always make sure you get the .onion link for this and every hidden service from a safe place (like Darknetmarkets.org), never from Wikipedia, Reddit, or Hidden Wikis! Also make sure that you never use the blockchain.info clearnet url over Tor; doing that opens you up another possible vulnerability (malicious tor exit nodes). A good place to make sure you are using the correct URL is from our Darknet Resources page, or memorize our short link for it: drk.li/BC.
The Steps
Step #1: Create a wallet on the clearnet. (We will refer to this as wallet #1)
Step #2: Buy Bitcoins, and send the amount you want to mix to wallet #1.
Step #3: Create a second wallet, this time over the Tor network. (wallet #2)
Step #4: Send your bitcoins from wallet #1 directly to wallet #2.
The reason for this is to add plausible dependability between your clearnet wallet and in-person purchases. If you are ever investigated by law enforcement or the company from which you are buying coins (this happens with Coinbase.com especially), you can reasonably claim that you sent them to someone else who controls wallet #2 (for whatever made-up reason you have in mind as your excuse for your BTC purchase). After that you have no idea/don’t care what that person did with them, nor should anyone expect you to.
Step #5: Create a third wallet, also over the Tor network. (wallet #3).
Step #6: Select which mixer you will be using, and set up your transaction there using the address(s) from wallet #3. It is best to use multiple addresses, and to set random time delays.
ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE CORRECT .ONION LINKS!
Scams are rampant everywhere online, and the darknet is no different. You can choose your mixer(s) and get the correct URLs from our list of darknet Bitcoin mixers.
We recommend Helix by Grams first, and then Bitcoin Fog, as the two seemingly best in a group of imperfect options. They have both been extremely reliable so far while processing millions of dollars. DO NOT use blockchain.info’s shared send or any other coinjoin product as your mixer, as those do not completely hide your trail like the others.
Mixers in DarkNet:
braveb6iya2flzc2.com - BraveBunny - Down
btcwashzcpqkxkwt.online - Bitcoin Wash Down
Bestbitcoincleaner.com - BestBitCoinCleaner ONLINE
btc-swap.com - Helix Light - ONLINE
Bitcoinfogg.com - BitcoinFogg DarkNet Mixer -ONLINE
NOTE: Turn off JavaScript before doing this step if you are using Helix, Bitcoin Fog, r or other mixers that function without it. (Click on the “S!” icon before the address bar in the Tor browser, then >Forbid Scripts Globally”.)

For All Future Kratom Users!

If and when kratom becomes illegal, do not give up hope. Do not succumb to the desire to use it as an excuse to relapse. Thanks to MANY people, kratom will still be accessible. It'll just cost more because the vendors have the responsibility to sell a schedule 1 drug.
Learn to use the darknet. It's pretty easy, the minimal you have to know is download Tor and go to the /darknetmarkets wiki to get the link to your desires darknet (ALWAYS use the wiki to get the link! There are many fraudulent links that'll take your money). Also learn Bitcoin and PGP (see links below). It is seriously as easy as 2 simple Google searches to do all this.
Tons of people are going to be taking this time, right now, as an opportunity to stock the hell up and sell it for a higher price. Kratom will not be inaccessible anytime soon. :-)

A guide for buying online

Ive seen people have been asking for it and i decided id post up a guide for buying online seeing as ive some knowledge in this area with many successful transactions. This guide won’t be going too deep but will give you the perfect protection and security for getting started to buying online.
What is needed
VPN
A VPN is a virtual private network and in layman terms it masks your identity so snooping eyes cannot see what you are doing over a network. This is very useful when searching on the clearnet (websites without .onion directory). It also helps in hiding tor traffic from your internet provider. Even though everything on tor is encrypted your internet provider can still see when you are using the tor network, VPN blocks them from seeing this. A VPN is essential. For finding a good VPN go to this site/this site
Tor Browser Bundle
Im sure most of you know what this is already but for those who don’t its the browser needed to access hidden websites on the tor network, to download it go to tor
Bitcoin
Bitcoin is the currency you will be using to purchase online. You can obtain bitcoin in many ways but for it to be truly untraceable purchasing using a bank account linked to your name isn’t a great idea. This is why many people like to use the site localbitcoins to meet up and purchase bitcoin using cash. If you are in dublin there are 2 bitcoin atms in the city centre which are very useful for getting bitcoins. To store your Bitcoins you will need a wallet and this is where you can store your bitcoins you purchased. For simplicity you can set up an online wallet at blockchain but for a more secure wallet you should download one. Its not a necessity but i would recommend Electrum
PGP
PGP stands for “Pretty Good Privacy,” and it’s most often used for sending encrypted messages between two people. This is a necessity when buying online as you will use it for sending information such as your shipping address. I won’t go into the full details on how to use PGP but there are some great tutorials on PGP on youtube.
Buying process
Im going to run through the steps of the buying process in order.
(1)Make sure you VPN is running, open up tor browser and navigate to your market of preference. You can find a list of markets and their addresses over at /darknetmarkets wiki page.
(2)Search for your desired product. When looking for the right product one thing you should keep in mind is Escrow. Escrow is essentially the paypal of the darknet. It is a middle man and holds the bitcoins you sent to the buyer safe until you’ve marked the product as received, they are then released to the seller. This is good as if the seller scams you and you do not receive anything you can open a dispute with the market and get your coins back. Unfortunatley because of all the market exit scams a lot of buyers are asking for full escrow so their money isn’t lost and this is where common sense comes in. If a buyer asks for full escrow and has negative feedback or a bad rep, stay clear. Im gonna recommend sticking with buyers who offer escrow and order from countries within the EU. Ordering from countries outside of the EU would carries the most risk of getting stopped by customs.
(3)Once you’ve found the product you want your ready to move onto the next step which is getting bitcoins. Go tolocalbitcoins and buy some bitcoins near you. As I recommended above i would steer towards cash transactions for bitcoins rather than transactions using paypal or your bank account.
(4)Once you have your bitcoins its time to purchase the product. Send the bitcoins from your bitcoin wallet to the wallet on the market you are using. You can find your bitcoin wallet address for that market by clicking on your balance. When sending the bitcoins to the market they don’t not show up straight away, it usually takes between 10mins and 1 hour.
(5)When they have arrived to your wallet on the market navigate to the product you are buying and purchase.
(6)you will be met with the confirmation screen where you will input any comments and shipping details. This is where you will use PGP to encrypt the message, use the PGP tutorial i have linked above. NEVER send personal information(name/address) in plain text, normal chitchat between you and the buyer is fine in plain text though. I recommend using address doctor to see if your address is formatted correctly for international purchases.
(7)Now sit back and wait for the product you have purchased to arrive.
some recommendations i have for first timers:
If anyone has any questions feel free to ask I know some of the steps are a bit tricky and i would be happy to help

A Beginner's guide to the Darknet Markets

Hello Everyone! Today, I'm going to teach you how to access the darknet and how you can help keep yourself anonymous and safe. This guide is going to be UK-centric for the parts that are localised - like buying bitcoins.
Quick Disclaimer: Everything you do on the Darknet is at your own risk. Do your research where you feel you don't have enough information. Be informed and be educated.
Also worth mentioning is specific subreddits, they'll likely have more detailed guides for every step available: /DarkNetMarketsNoobs & /DarkNetMarkets
The most important thing to remember is that how anonymous you are on the darknet is up to you. It can take time and effort to do it properly, but ensuring your privacy and safety is important with things like this.
Okay, so here we go.

Tails - Website

Tails is an operating system that you can install to a memory stick, DVD or SD Card. You restart your computer and choose it as your boot device. Instead of windows, you'll load up on the Tails operating system. It comes with Tor built in and once you shutdown the computer your whole session will be wiped. I personally don't use tails, but it's pretty highly recommended to use it if you can, it provides a whole lot of security.
The real benefit of using Tails is that your session is wiped after you've shutdown, so there's no evidence logged onto your computer at all. So keep in mind, if you use tails, do not store a wallet on it. As soon as you shutdown, your bitcoins would be lost forever.

Tor - Website

Tor is an internet browser that you'll need to use to access the darknet. You use this to access any .onion links. Using Tor means that your internet traffic will be directed through a bunch of randomised nodes to hide your internet traffic. More information on the website.
Note: When you launch Tor, to the left of your address bar there's an 'S' symbol. Click this and disable all scripts. This will turn off Javascript - which is important because there are vulnerabilities within Javascript itself which can render your computer unsafe.

Markets

You should now have either have tails installed to a USB stick ready to boot or Tor installed to your computer. So now you'll need access to a market. I personally can recommend Agora, it's one of the longest standing markets and they've survived a lot of attacks and investigations. It can be pretty tempermental though and suffers from downtime occasionally. The other most used market is BlackBank but I don't have any personal experience with this.
Agora - http://agorahooawayyfoe.onion/registeEJNZoVsMp6
BlackBank - http://wztyb7vlfcw6l4xd.onion

Finding Products

Now it's time for you to find the product you want. In Agora you'll want to make sure that the vendor has a green thumb near their username. This means that you don't need to finalise early. Once you find the product you want, check the vendors profile. Some vendors will want you to finalise early if you have under a certain amount of orders on your account, so you may need to make small orders initially to build reputation. Ideally you also want a vendor with a high rating who has made lots of deals. Someone who is reliable.
So you've found a product you want from a vendor you trust. You now need to place the order. If you've been following along with this guide while you're making your order I want you to read the following four sections before continuing.

Bitcoins

So you know how many bitcoins you're going to need. I get my bitcoins from Bit Bargain for the uk. Register for an account and follow the steps on the website to get your bitcoins. It has a step-by-step guide to follow and it's very easy to do. It'll involve a bank transfer too, so make sure you're prepared for that. It might be worth noting that transferring coins from your own wallet can cost you bitcoins, usually around 0.0001 BTC, so it can be worth it to get a tiny amount extra than needed. This also helps to account for any variation in the value of bitcoin in the time it takes for you to buy the coins and get them to your Agora wallet.
Once you've got your coins transfer them to your own personal wallet. You can transfer them directly to your darknet wallet also. The recommended wallet to use at the moment is Electrum. Make sure you get your bitcoins out otherwise bitbargain will tax you 1% every week.

Tumbling

I don't personally follow this step but I feel it should be in everyone's interest to know about it. Tumbling your coins will also cost you a fee depending on which tumbling service you decide to use.
The way this works is that bitcoins use a blockchain so that you can track where it's been throughout its existence. So the idea is that if a vendor has their coins seized they can track the transactions back to you through the blockchain. In practice, the chances of this happening are minimal and tumbling coins is ultimately not necessary. It can't be proved that you sent that money to them for anything illicit anyway. But if you want to practice that extra bit of safety - and I encourage everyone to be as safe as possible - then you can look at something like Helix as a tumbler. You can investigate the darknet subreddits for other recommendations too, as I do not know a lot about tumbling personally.

Encryption

This is the most important step here. So, you've got bitcoins and transferred them to your chosen market's wallet. Go back to the vendor profile and check for a PGP key. This is their public key and you're going to use this to encrypt your address so only that vendor can read it.
This is a great and detailed guide I'd recommend you follow. It covers everything you need to know.
So import the vendors key, type out your name and address in full, including country if the source is from abroad. Use your real name and address. It may seem scary, but I assure you that your postman is more likely to be suspicious that you're suddenly receiving a lot of packages for John Smith, who only seems to have recently moved in to your place.
Encrypt your address with the vendors key and save it to your clipboard.

Making The Order

Okay, you've got the bitcoins in your wallet and you've encrypted your address with your vendors PGP key. Click "Buy..." then paste your encrypted message into the box and press "Confirm" for your order. You'll need to make sure you've got all the funds in your wallet. This will take you to a finalisation page. DO NOT FINALISE until your product arrives. Don't ever finalise before you receive your product.
The finalisation page for each order can be accessed via the "Orders" tab on Agora. This is where the vendor will update the status and send you messages if necessary.
The order will auto-finalise after 14 days, releasing the money to the vendor. Make sure that if your product hasn't turned up by then you log in to Agora and send a message to the vendor explaining that it hasn't turned up to extend the auto-finalise time. It could be that you can resolve the problems with the vendor directly.
As soon as your product arrives though, log in and finalise your order. Bitcoins are a volatile currency and the vendors should be paid for their service, so release the funds to them when you've got what you ordered.

No Order?

If your order doesn't turn up - don't panic. In the UK, controlled deliveries seem to be entirely uncommon. In all chances, the order may have just been confiscated or lost in the post. I'd recommend that if an order never turns up though that you not order to that address again. It could be flagged, it could be ignored, but I don't really know and it's your choice.
If you do receive a letter from the post office or any other agency, then you should definitely not use that address.
On the entirely slim chance you ever do get a visit from the police - you have no knowledge of that package and you should always lawyer up if it ever goes further. Use your Miranda Rights and keep quiet. It's not as prevalent here in the UK I don't think, but you should always protect yourself. To be honest there doesn't seem to be much record in the dark net subreddits about police incidence in the UK though.

Other Tips

Make your Dark Net Identity separate from your other Identities. Don't reuse online personas you use to comment on reddit or any other service. Pick two random words in the dictionary and throw in some random numbers if you want. Your darknet name should be unique and unidentifiable. The only way in which your dark net identity should be linked to you is when you send a vendor your address and name. And even then a vendor should not be storing this information. If you get the sense a vendor is storing your data in any way, then try to avoid that vendor if you can.
Don't leave leftover coins in your market wallet. I say this as someone that lost a tiny amount of coins on the Evo exit scam and a slightly larger sum during the Silk Road raid. It's always a good idea to have control over your own coins. I'd probably password protect your wallet too.
Domestic orders are always safer. If a delivery doesn't have to come through customs then it's always going to be less likely to be detected. Then again, Canada has some crazy green prices. Personal choice.
For Mac users I'd recommend Tails even more highly than before because I really do not have any experience with Mac. If however you don't want to use it, there's a guide on DarkNetMarketsNoobs
Always check vendor reviews for mentions of poor stealth. This means that the vendor is not hiding what they're sending you in the post. Obviously this increases your risk of being caught, which is bad. So a vendor who has a reputation for good stealth is recommended. Oh, and don't ever discuss the actual mechanics of the stealthing methods in a public forum. It should remain secret.
You can use www.dnstats.net to check the availability of darknet sites. You can use this to find tumblers, markets and whatever else you might want for the darknet. It will also show you the uptimes of the websites so you can work out reliability for yourselves.
20/04/2015 - LSD from the Netherlands I haven't seen anything mentioned super recently, but it seemed like earlier in the month a lot of LSD orders out of the netherlands have been confiscated. I don't know if it's still going on but keeping an eye on the dark net subreddits should keep you informed.

End

And that's it - you should know everything you need to know to order from the darknet. If you have any questions or comments about the guide, leave a comment or message me and I'll try to update it.

How to earn Bitcoin?

Overview - Table of Contents Introduction to Earning in Bitcoin Work for Bitcoin Sell for Bitcoin Affiliate Programs Gambling Bitcoin Mining Hardware Mining Cloud Mining Introduction to Earning in Bitcoin Bitcoin is the most popular digital currency in the world today. Bitcoin cloud mining is the fastest way to immediately begin earning bitcoins. Bitcoin is built using very complicated cryptographic principles, and supported by countless individuals and companies from all around the world. By early 2016, total Bitcoin market capitalization had crossed USD 7 Billion, making it almost as valuable as the GDP of a small country like Bahamas. All the other digital currencies together do not constitute even 20% of Bitcoin’s market capitalization, underlining the its dominance and importance in the world of digital currencies.
With such a huge amount of world’s capital available in the form of Bitcoins, the number and types of opportunities to earn in bitcoins are increasing by the day. In this article we will discuss such opportunities that help us earn bitcoins.
We will start with the easiest, or the one that is applicable for the maximum number of people, and then move to the tougher ones. In the end we will cover earning bitcoins by mining. Bitcoin mining is not an easy way to earn bitcoins, but we do have a number of easier ones we will discuss first. So lets start with ‘earning bitcoins by offering your services’
Work for Bitcoin Perhaps the easiest way to earn bitcoins is to work online or in real life for bitcoins. Because of the huge size of the bitcoin eco-system, a number of such opportunities and jobs are available. With Billions of dollars invested in Bitcoin by tens of thousands of people, there is a real market in Bitcoin, where you can find jobs for freelancers, software developers, writers, and others who get paid in bitcoins for their services.
Software development, writing, design, making websites or apps, audio transcription, are some of the most active types of jobs. You can easily discover the types of jobs by going over the more popular job boards for bitcoin related work. The following job boards or forums are some of the best places to look for such jobs or gigs.
Freelancing
XBTfreelancer Cryptogrind Bitlancerr Coinality Bitgigs Jobs4Bitcoins Rein Project Crypto Jobs List Market Places
OpenBazaar Purse.io Bitify /bitmarket 21 Market Video Streaming
Watchmybit Streamium.io Tasks
Bitasker BitforTip WillPayCoin File/Image Sharing
Supload.com SatoshiBox JoyStream Advertising
CoinAd A-ads Coinzilla.io Also, check BitcoinGames for ideas on earning bitcoin and blockchain game assets.
Sell for bitcoin You can also get Bitcoin by selling your old laptops, phones or other items for Bitcoins. Such types of transactions are happening more and more, and a lot of buyers are already buying anything from iPhones to even cars by paying with Bitcoins. For Americans, Craigslist.com is your best bet when you want to find such buyers. You can mention in your ad that you are willing to take payment in Bitcoin. This way if anyone wants to buy the item for you for Bitcoin, they can contact you and make an offer. The same principle applies to other online marketplaces such as gumtree for UK, kijiji for canda etc.
Affiliate Programs Affiliate programs allow a promoter of a business or product to earn money or bitcoins by refering new clients to such businesses or products. For example, amazon.com has a popular affiliate program, where you can earn commission ranging from 2% to 20% for refering clients to products listed on amazon.com. Amazon normally pays in dollars, but there are a number of other sites and businesses which pay you in bitcoin for acting as their affiliate.
Some of the more popular affiliate programs that pay out in Bitcoin are by the sites: cex.io, coinbase.com, okcoin.com and namecheap.com, among others. You can find a larger list of such affiliate programs on the bitcoin wiki page for Affiliates.
Gambling We do not recommend gambling for every player or every user; we find that gambling is only suitable for people who know how to win at it. However, if you are one of such lucky users who have some tricks up their sleeves, and can manage to win at games such as poker, then you will find that earning bitcoins is not that hard.
One of the many applications of bitcoin since the very beginning have been in betting games or gambling. Because of the relative anonymity of bitcoin, and the lower fees, it is very suitable for gambling related applications. Indeed, one such game, satoshiDICE, has been running since 2012, and has paid out a huge number of bitcoins in innumerable transactions to its winners. There are many such games, which you can find be googling.
If you want to gamble totally anonymously, you can play gambling or betting games that are available only on darknet or .onion sites. Such sites allow you to browse them anonymous by operating on the tor network, which is a secure network that allows users to browse .onion websites without exposing their own IP address.
Bitcoin Mining For each block that is added to the Bitcoin Blockchain, a number of bitcoins are rewarded to the creater of that block. This reward is currently, as of June 2016, 25 bitcoins per block, and it halves every four years. The next halving will be in July 2016. Creating or finding the new blocks, and therefore winning the reward of 25 bitcoins for each block you create, is called bitcoin mining. To do bitcoin mining successfully, you need very powerful computers, which compete with other computers to find the next block. The speed or power of computer that do bitcoin mining is calculated in hashes calculated per second.
There are two ways to do bitcoin mining: one is to own hardware or computers that do the mining, and second is to hire the hardware from a third party, usually online, and do the mining on the cloud. Let us discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both in next two sections.
Hardware Mining When you own the hardware that does the calculations and mining of bitcoins, its called hardware mining. Hardware mining is the more popular or prevalent of the two types of mining we mentioned. One of the biggest factors which comes into play when doing bitcoin mining using your own hardware is the price of electricity. If you pay top price for electricity, then bitcoin mining may not be your cup of tea. Another related factor is infrastructure needed to cool the hardware; since every cpu generates some amount of heat, you may need to cool the hardware in case they become too heated. No wonder that some of the most successful miners work from China, specially Tibet, where they can get cheap electricity, and their cooling costs are low due to high altitude which reduces the ambient temperature for them.
For a more in-depth information on how to setup your hardware mining equipment, have a look at the Antminer setup page.
Currently, based on (1) price per hash and (2) electrical efficiency the best Bitcoin miner options are:
AntMiner S7 AntMiner S7 Bitcoin Miner 4.73 Th/s 0.25 W/Gh 8.8 pounds Yes $479.95 AntMiner S7 Bitcoin Miner 0.1645
AntMiner S9 AntMiner S9 Bitcoin Miner 13.5 Th/s 0.098 W/Gh 8.1 pounds Yes $1,987.95 AntMiner S9 Bitcoin Miner 0.3603
Avalon6 Avalon6 Bitcoin Miner 3.5 Th/s 0.29 W/Gh 9.5 pounds No $499.95 Avalon6 Bitcoin Miner 0.1232 Cloud Mining There are a number of service providers that allow you to rent computational hardware from them, which can then be used to do bitcon mining. Some of these services are designed with bitcoin mining in mind, whereas others such as Amazon AWS are general purpose services that can also be used to do bitcoin mining.
Some of the cloud mining services which can be used to do bitcoin mining on the cloud are:
Hashflare Review: Hashflare offers SHA-256 mining contracts and more profitable SHA-256 coins can be mined while automatic payouts are still in BTC. Customers must purchase at least 10 GH/s.
Genesis Mining Review: Genesis Mining is the largest Bitcoin and scrypt cloud mining provider. Genesis Mining offers three Bitcoin cloud mining plans that are reasonably priced. Zcash mining contracts are also available.
Hashing 24 Review: Hashing24 has been involved with Bitcoin mining since 2012. They have facilities in Iceland and Georgia. They use modern ASIC chips from BitFury deliver the maximum performance and efficiency possible.
Minex Review: Minex is an innovative aggregator of blockchain projects presented in an economic simulation game format. Users purchase Cloudpacks which can then be used to build an index from pre-picked sets of cloud mining farms, lotteries, casinos, real-world markets and much more.
Minergate Review: Offers both pool and merged mining and cloud mining services for Bitcoin.
Hashnest Review: Hashnest is operated by Bitmain, the producer of the Antminer line of Bitcoin miners. HashNest currently has over 600 Antminer S7s for rent. You can view the most up-to-date pricing and availability on Hashnest's website. At the time of writing one Antminer S7's hash rate can be rented for $1,200.
Bitcoin Cloud Mining Review: Currently all Bitcoin Cloud Mining contracts are sold out.
NiceHash Review: NiceHash is unique in that it uses an orderbook to match mining contract buyers and sellers. Check its website for up-to-date prices.
Eobot Review: Start cloud mining Bitcoin with as little as $10. Eobot claims customers can break even in 14 months.
MineOnCloud Review: MineOnCloud currently has about 35 TH/s of mining equipment for rent in the cloud. Some miners available for rent include AntMiner S4s and S5s.

Let's type up some of the text so it's easier to analyse and so people can find this thread via google in the future.
Forum structure apparently has a 'verified sellers' forum, common with forum based carding sites and older darknet markets.

How many characters is that? 30 - but wait, how long are addresses usually?
Most Bitcoin addresses are 34 characters. They consist of random digits and uppercase and lowercase letters, with the exception that the uppercase letter "O", uppercase letter "I", lowercase letter "l", and the number "0" are never used to prevent visual ambiguity.
Some Bitcoin addresses can be shorter than 34 characters (as few as 26) and still be valid. A significant percentage of Bitcoin addresses are only 33 characters, and some addresses may be even shorter

What does the modern day active Socialist look like?

[This is a paper trying to list all possible ideas Socialists can do to be active for the Socialist cause. After all, paraphrasing Marx: we can read and talk all day long, but the point is to change the world! Any comments are welcome. Looking for more suggestions as well.]
What does the Modern Day Active Socialist Look Like?
Obviously everyone cannot do everything listed. Do the things within your ability.
Individually: 1) Health and well being - i) Physical health – How can one ask others to take care of each other and the planet when one does not take care of his or her self? Eat nutritious meals. Get some exercise everyday. ii) Mental health – Never stop learning. Always be creating and reading and not just Socialist related material.
2) Boycott large corporations – Avoid all major corporations to the maximum of one's ability. Use alternatives like the farmer's market or credit unions.
3) Literally use less stuff – Do you really need that? The less you buy, the less pollution created and profit earned for the imperial power. Buy local. Buy used.
4) Garden – The more control one has over one's own basic means of necessities means the less reliance one has on corporations. You will be better off and they won't be. If you do not have land, consider finding unused land to garden such as some older people's house where they don't use their lawn.
5) Learn basic skills – If you have the ability and materials, make your own stuff. Learn basic car maintenance, etc.
6) Understand computer and Internet technologies – learn about online anonymity, darknets, mesh networks, encryption. Understand and use tools like TOR, TrueCrypt, Linux, Bitcoins, etc. Technology is one of the greatest ways to bring power back into the hands of the people. Hackivism, WikiLeaks, and even simply recording and releasing private meetings of the wealthy are extremely effective means to spreading the message and expose corruption. Technology puts us on a level playing field, gives us access to behind guarded walls. It's no secret police spy on Leftist groups. Should you be apart of a Socialist community, the ability to maintain communication without outside disturbance or surveillance is important.
The over all theme is rely more on yourself and less on imperialistic powers.
Collectively: 1) Teach – Setup teach-ins at your library, park, house, coffeehouse, etc. teaching others anything written above.
2) i) Start a Socialist book club – Low leadership, low involvement, easy way to meet like minded people while continuing to educate yourself. ii) After the book club is established, have a 'personal writing' night where you read papers and hear ideas written from members of your group. This will foster comradery and engage people more than just reading books.
3) Within your group (book club, network of friends, Socialist organization, etc.) setup research projects – The research should be practical projects your group can do to bring about change. For example, installing solar panels, communal housing architecture (large houses build with the environment in mind where groups of people live and share appliances and space), coops and/or non-profits, local government and how to pass a bill (with a bill in mind to advocate for), and so on. Break up into small teams. Set a time limit of 2-3 months. Share progress to keep people active and engaged. Then set a plan and act on one or more of the projects!
4) Join established groups – Look online and in local news papers for Socialist groups or organizations with some Socialist values (anti-war, anti-racist, pro-democracy, etc.). Join them. Don't sit on the side lines. Actively partake in activities using whatever skills you excel at. Consider Anarchist groups as well, for they typically share the same values. Groups like Food Not Bombs are spread out everywhere.
5) Get involved in a coop or non-profit.
6) Talk. Talk. Talk. - We are many dealing with social problems. The first step to solving social problems is to socialize. Never stop talking about the issues and solutions.
Key concept is to have a network of like minded people engaged and organized. Be prepared to act and mobilize quickly for needs of your community.
The Left is notoriously splintered and divided despite the common view cooperation is the key to a better life. The Democratic Socialist might be too soft for your liking, and the Communist down the street is too radical, but the values and principles we believe in are what brought us to the Left. Be respectful and support to your comrades!

I have a feeling this topic might be controversial, but here goes... (we NEED DNM adoption NOW)

Hey guys. Lets cut to the chase.
I think we need to do some serious PR work with the darknet markets. Everyone knows bitcoin growth and adoption was massively fuelled buy the 'Silk Road'. (darknet Market) Bitcoin has been great for the past 5 years or so in facilitating these blackmarket transactions that make up a huge amount of the whole bitcoin economy. I strongly believe with out Silk Road bitcoin would not be where it is at now.
Now I know what a lot of you guys may be thinking: " We dont want to tarnish our good brand by actively going after the darknet market. But the truth is DASH is the BEST coin out there, that im aware of for anonymous transactions (darksend). Some of these market operators are realising this as well and implementing DASH into their markets. Right now you can get on TOR and buy blackmarket goods with dash. Abraxas Market, Nucleus etc. So its already happening. We can do two things. Pretend its not happening (kind of whats happening now) or we can embrace this market show them how our coin is far superior in regard to anonymous transactions.
We can do this by keeping active on the DMN forums and trying to get the point across that BitCoin is not anonymous by default. This can be shown using software such as blockseer.com and going through some case studyies showing how BTC transactions can be linked back to market usage etc.
I notice many vendors on these markets are still not to keen to take dash, even though it would be far safer for them to do so. We need to have guides how people can trade DASH for BTC etc. How vendors can cash out etc.
Also Dash is FAR faster with confirmations, meaning customers dont have to wait around sometimes over 1 hour for funds to clear in there accounts. (using BTC) I have deposited DASH on these markets and it takes less than 10 minutes for it to be spendable.
Buy the way please don’t think just because DASH has been added to these markets its going to stay there. Other markets have accepted LTC before and it never really took off. I made a purchase on nucleus using dash the other week. I even FE’ed my order as this was a trusted vendor. The vendor proceeded to cancel my order “saying he did not know where to get rid of the Dash coins” he said he had a system that works with BTC, and that was that. I mean it would have taken him 2 minutes to go to shapeshift.io or another service to convert to BTC but his lack of education on DASH made him change his mind.
I really think we need to get active on these forums and educate vendors and customers on the benefits of using DASH for transactions. I mean we all know its a lot after. (we could show vendors how coins can be traced with BTC using sites like blockseer.com
We need to do a full scale PR campaign on these markets. we need to get back to our ROOTS (dark) .
I understand why you guys changed the name and tried to clean up the image of this coins but IMO its not time to go ‘legit’. not yet.
Think about bitcoin. The sole reason BTC went from <1cent to >$100 was because of the silk road and the drug trade. I don’t see Bitcoin taking off for a few more years when it come to POS and retail adoption, so I kind of have the same feeling about dash. Let get this coin wanted on the dark net. Let make this the coin of choice for vendors to accept. We need to increase daily dash transaction volume and this is the perfect way!
I spend a lot of time on the Darknet markets and I would even be prepared to but in a proposal to the new Dash voting system to run a PR campaign. Honestly what do you guys think of this. We need vendors to say to their customers : “We prefer Dash as payment method”.

A SIMPLE GUIDE TO SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY TUMBLING (MIXING) BITCOINS

Questions Answers
Aren't you worried about bringing more attention to your site by doing something like an AMA rather then just relying on word of mouth? By doing something like this don't you run the risk of law enforcement agencies paying more attention to the fact that you exist? We want to bring attention to the site and bring our vendors more buyers. Law enforcement is going to be aware of us (and probably already is) regardless of the way we choose to put our product out there.
What made you decide to go into the business of running such a site? Just the money? Or other reasons? It was the appeal of providing a service that we believe in and a business decision. Prohibition is a backwards process.
We have taken technical measures to prevent and offset these risks if they arise. As for our identities being revealed, if a competitor is able to do it then law enforcement would be able to do it. That would be of a larger concern to us. We take many measures to protect our identity.
There are many legal items for sale as well, but the bulk of our items are drug related. We have no preference over what gets sold (assuming it does not break our restricted items rules).
We are indeed. We're looking for a web marketeSEO willing to be paid in Bitcoin.
Im curious as somewhat of amateur SEO marketer, how does one market a Tor Site? Surely it can't be done in regular ways such as adwords, keyword optimization, etc, etc. It is true that we can't use regular methods however we are after a person who can make YouTube how-to videos, create forum posts in various communities to increase the exposure to our site.
I've done some marketing and SEO, so just drop me a PM if you still need somebody. Thanks for your interest plerer, please PM us with your experience.
So how many inboxes have you gotten from people asking for jobs? If you aren't sick of them already, I'm interested in at least more information. I'll send a message should you reply to this. We've received about 20, but we're still looking.
Are you looking for resumes, cv's? how are you choosing a candidate? Based off previous work, and whatever data the applicant is comfortable providing.
What are your restricted items? And why don't you allow people to sell them? Restricted items include anything related to paedophilia, poisons, loans, investment opportunities, assassination services or anything which can inflict harm on another person. If you infringe on these rules we will terminate your account instantly.
Trading any digital currencies (for example Bitcoins, Litecoins, Ukash, Moneypak, Western Union, Moneygram, etc) is forbidden and will result in the items being removed and a warning or ban being issued to the vendor. This is to prevent scams.
The trading of counterfeit money is forbidden, and will result in a warning or ban being issued.
We also do not allow listings for 0.01 in the money section. Your items must have a full cost associated to them to prevent people processing transactions outside of the escrow system.
We allow the purchase of physical fiat for Bitcoins and/or Litecoins (has to be legitimate currency; not counterfeit). This is the only exception to the currency rule. We do not, however, allow the reverse of these transactions i.e. customers mailing vendors real currency as this is outside the escrow system.
As an example, if you were a vendor and you wanted to buy $1000 worth of Bitcoins/Litecoins you could do so by making a listing for $1000 labelled "Buying $1000 worth of Bitcoins/Litecoins", and then mail the real currency to the purchaser of your listing in exchange for their Bitcoins/Litecoins that are currently travelling through the escrow system.
Why are investment opportunities banned? Because they're commonly used as scam tactics.
What about fake Ids? Can you guys make/sell those? Our vendors sell a lot of those.
Why is counterfeit money banned? Part of the "harm to others" rule? It's frequently used in scams. When we allowed it, 100% of the counterfeit money sales were scams. It's also hurting local businesses etc.
Would you mind posting a link to the be-all, end-all, one stop tutorial installation page to safely and securely start using TOR, Bitcoin and Atlantis? 1) Download and install the Tor browser bundle - Link to www.torproject.org 2) Download and install the Bitcoin client - Link to bitcoin.org 3) You'll need to obtain some Bitcoins. The most popular exchange is MtGox (www.mtgox.com). They offer a few ways in which you can convert your local currency to Bitcoins. 4) Using the Tor browser, visit Atlantis (URL can be found at /Atlantis) 6) Click on the deposit BTC link under account settings and transfer your Bitcoins to that address. You'll need to wait for 1-2 hours before the transfer propagates across the network. 7) You can then shop for any items you would like whilst being confident on security and privacy.
Someone help me with step 3? Its just telling me I cant open the program. That step is optional, you don't HAVE to use PGP. Especially if you just plan on having a browse.
Just commenting to find this later. )
Can you send me some drugs? Edit: Not a cop. Our vendors can.
How do you rate yourself compared to the road? We've had no downtime.
Our site is much more responsive.
We have cheaper commission rates allowing sellers to make more profit on their sales and buyers to buy them for cheaper.
We have automated PGP encryption of messages for the members who refuse to send their messages using PGP. We have an advancement fan management system, allowing sellers to reach out to all of their customers.
We have a more 'modern' user interface.
We have buyer feedback (none of the other marketplaces have this functionality).
We have an anonymous feedback system that allows you to determine is feedback is fake, but at the same time does not reveal anything about your buying patterns.
We support Litecoin as well as Bitcoin (the first market to support multiple currencies).
We listen to our user feedback, we have a rapid development cycle and new features are constantly being improved upon and added.
I'd like to personally thank you guys for everything you do to make online drug purchasing a safer and better experience. +altcointip 1 ltc. That's very kind of you, thank you! :-)
We've had no downtime. What do you say to all of the rumors that you were funding the DDoS aimed at the Road when your site first came online to pull traffic? We released an official statement regarding those accusations, it can be found on our forum. In short: We had nothing to do with it. It was speculative rumor.
What are you doing to cut down on scams and discrimination against new buyers? If your rules are that vendors are not supposed to deal outside of escrow, what are you doing about those vendors who require it in their policies? > "Yes we have caught scammers, but we've banned them swiftly. We pushed out new changes earlier that helps reduce the number of scams, all feedback contains the amount of the purchase, preventing users from leaving fake feedback on $0.01 listings. It also contains an 'anonymous' user ID so sellers/buyers can confirm whether the user leaving feedback has left feedback before. This helps catch scammers leaving fake feedback. The ID is unique to the sellebuyer combination, so it cannot be traced across transactions to determine a buyers buying patterns."
Further to the above we've made it easy to report suspicious vendors, there's a button directly on their profile that will notify support.
In regard to the vendors that require it in their policies, they will be warned or banned if they request FE without meeting our FE requirements (a minimum of 30 5/5 transactions). This system has already saved countless people from scammers.
New buyers are encouraged to purchase small orders first to build their reputation and feedback and find vendors who are pleasant to deal with. I haven't seen a problem of buyer discrimination yet (apart from on scammer profiles saying 'you must FE because you have no feedback').
If I am not mistaken, the Black Market Reloaded also has buyer feedback. Not that I would know, as I never go to such sites... I'm not sure, but I've heard its a haven for scammers, and they have no escrow process.
How about weighting reviews based on the amount of funds transferred? E.g., a $10 transaction review is worth 10x the review of a $1 transaction. This is a good idea, however this would impact the freshness of the feedback if we sort it by the value.
Aren't you worried the authorities are tracking this ama? They probably are. We aren't worried.
Why did you decided to accept Litecoin first? Also do you think Litecoin price will go up because of your site? Also how long did it take to prepare and set everything up? We wanted to promote Litecoin because it has a few awesome improvements over Bitcoin, so we started with Litecoin. I think a lot of the value has come from Atlantis already, and more will come from Atlantis with our growth. It's taken a year to get the site where it is at the moment with a few developers working on it mostly full time.
I've checked out atlantis, purely out of curiosity. I don't do drugs at all, but it seems that the prices are higher than street prices. Why do people prefer to buy on Atlantis? Is it due to knowing they're getting good quality? It seems riskier than buying drugs on the street. Greater quality, ease of access, safer than dealing with unknowns on the streets. A lot of people don't have access to a friendly in-person dealer.
The prices vary, some are actually cheaper then what you can find on the street.
Some of the main reasons why people choose to purchase off Atlantis include;
1) Quality of the merchandise. Because of the sites feedback and reputation system, you can be certain that you will be receiving an unadulterated item.
2) Order in the comfort of your own home and have the parcel delivered to you (with tracking).
3) Thousands of items to choose from. Sometimes a local dealer will not have a product you are after.
4) Deal with currencies which can be used to purchase items without the reliance of fiat.
5) Encrypted correspondence, more secure then messaging/calling your local dealer.
So how is it possible to get delivery anonymously? i mean, at some point don't you have to give your name and address to the seller? And if they are ever busted and you are in their database as a customer; aren't you kinda...you know...fucked? Thanks for the AMA by the way. Some purchasers use fake names to hide their identity, others don't. We have a strict rule where vendors must remove all information about their clients once the parcel has been shipped (e.g from their computer). Also, once the order has been shipped, the address is automatically purged from our database.
How do you enforce a rule like that? what's to stop a vendor from simply writing an address down on a sticky note? Unfortunately we can't enforce it, we can only advise them to do it. Our system also permanently deletes this information after first viewing.
So...you're an online drug dealer? How is this legal or how are you skirting laws to keep yourself from prosecution? I don't know of any countries/territories where selling Heroin would be legal. We're not a dealer, we provide the platform for dealers to sell their products in a secure environment. The Tor network hides our service from government officials. You can have a look into "Tor hidden services" if you're interested.
How do you usually guarantee the safety of your "company' and the buyer? We use a Tor hidden service to hide our service from the prying eyes of government officials: Link to www.torproject.org
Do you ever deliver in bulk? This allows our servers IP address and location to remain hidden.
Are there any suppliers that you deal where they are a legal company on the surface? Users must access our site using the Tor hidden browser, protecting their identity: Link to www.torproject.org
What are your personal political views? What about certain topics like child pornography, necrophilia or any other cultural taboos that are usually at the expense of another unwilling person? We don't deliver anything, but our sellers commonly deliver in bulk. We facilitate the platform, the sellers are from the general public.
What are your top non-drug related products? See above.
Is your company white collarish or do you have people who work with you that use violence and intimidation? We do not allow listings such as child pornography and necrophilia. We do take a moral stance, there's a large difference between child pornography and drugs.
Is government bribery common with your company? Probably porn.
We don't use violence or intimidation, nor do we have any need to. We're an online platform. The idea is to move away from the violent streets.
No, that doesn't happen (or hasn't happened yet).
Oh I see so basically your site is like the middle man am I correct? Alright that does make a lot of my questions moot. That's correct.
Have you had any scares before? None.
How illegal is Atlantis? I mean, not for the vendors/buyers, but how illegal is it as the CEO of the website? (Basically, how much trouble would YOU get into, if shit hit the fan?) Google "farmers market bust" for an example.
What did those men do wrong, and do you think you've solved to that issue? A lot of silly mistakes and using very traceable means of trade.
A screenshot of a website doesn't really prove anything. Do you have any proof that you are the CEO of this company? I've added a link to the AMA on the footer of the website.
Without going into any personal details (obviously) what brought you to this biz? I.e. formal versus informal education... comp sci vs. Mba-type edu... or whatever ur able to say. Can't go into education specifics sorry.
Also, as someone who is intrigued and has made half-assed attempts to get a bit/litecoin account setup and given up after hitting various obstacles, am I right to assess your biggest barrier to growth are the hurdles customers need to jump through to make transactions? Or am I just a stupid brain? If you'd like any assistance getting set up let us know, we can point you in the right direction. The seeming complexity of cryptocurrency is definitely a barrier to growth. It's all relatively simple once you get your head around it though. Bitcoins/Litecoins are far easier to obtain in certain countries than others.
Do you keep lawyers on retainer? We have a few lawyers using our platform to offer legal advice for a fee.
Hi. I have never posted/commented on reddit before, after about 5 years of being a lurker. This is too cool an opportunity not to. It's progressed to a full time job for us at this point. There isn't a day we aren't working on Atlantis.
How many hours a week on average do you work? What do you do outside of work for fun? What kind of music do you listen to? I'd love to answer those questions but they're a bit revealing sorry.
What is the biggest security threat you have had? We did a lot of planning in relation to this and haven't had any security issues so far. Our biggest concern would be if a security flaw was discovered in the technology we rely on (e.g flaw in the onion routing protocol or the Bitcoin protocol).
I've heard these sites are much more common than people realize. How much traffic do you guys get? We're one of the largest markets, and the most refined. We get thousands of visitors and hundreds of orders are processed through Atlantis a day.
How come you can post this here and not be instantly arrested? Link to www.torproject.org
Link to en.wikipedia.org
What does one sell on a black market that falls under the "Home & Garden" section...? Ikea lamps...
And nutrient dense soil, growing equipment, CFL's, HPS lamps, etc.
Why do buy / sell these types of items on the black market rather than any major online retailer? Since we use cryptocurrencies its a good way for people to use them to buy other items. Think of it like eBay but with a twist.
Are you worried that your usage of Tor contributes to undermining its image as a legitimate utility for online anonymity, in the same way that Bittorrent is often immediately associated with piracy? We hope that our usage does not tarnish its perception of being a legitimate tool. The core of our operation is to give people access to a 'true free market' whilst still protecting our users and ourselves. However just like a knife - it can be used for good and for bad.
We can only hope that the media and government doesn't portray Tor as a tool used by 'terrorists and criminals'.
Have you caught any scammers yet? Yes we have caught scammers, but we've banned them swiftly. The ID is unique to the sellebuyer combination, so it cannot be traced across transactions to determine a buyers buying patterns.
Whilst you have swiftly banned sellers, can't they just make a new account? With the nature of TOR you couldn't ban their IP could you? That is correct, we cannot ban them by IP (there is no distinction on the Tor network). They would need to pay a new vendor account fee every time they create a new vendor account.
What are you doing to cut down on scams and discrimination against new buyers? We have implemented a few metrics in the feedback system, these include;
1) Buyer and seller feedback, rated in quality (out of 5).
2) Total purchases made.
3) Account age.
4) Item price in feedback history.
5) User hash which allows people to identify if the buyer is unique or the same person leaving fake feedback whilst still keeping their username anonymous.
We are currently working on two new metrics, these include;
1) Was the parcel received.
2) The users historic purchase total.
Unfortunately new buyers will always be a risk for vendors however with parcel tracking and the escrow system, these risks can be mitigated.
What's the best selling item? The most popular item is Cannabis.
What non-legal things other than drugs are done through your site specifically what's the most common things non-drug? Popular non-legal items other then typical illicit drugs include money handling services, identity services (generating passports) and cybercrime (malware).
The most common popular legal items include books, digital goods, legal money services and erotica.
So the site says I can get a FREE half gram of hash... do they actually send you that? Yes, vendors commonly offer free incentives to gather good reputation at the beginning of their seller career.
How did you get your first customers ? How did you advertise the site like this in the first place and create the initial market base? We posted an announcement in two cryptocurrency community forums and the news spread quite quickly.
We also offered incentives for vendors at other market places to sign up and take advantage of trading with no commission fees.
Where does your revenue come from, if you have no commission fees? Is it purely from cost associated with becoming a vendor? When we were running the 3 month commission free special, our income solely came from the vendor registration fee.
Our current commission structure can be seen below;
Value less than or equal to $50 6% Value less than or equal to $150 5.5% Value less than or equal to $300 5% Value less than or equal to $500 2% Value less than or equal to $1000 1.5% Value greater than $1000 1%
Do you have a retirement plan? Like quit and let someone else take over in a year? Everyone does gets busted in the end. Hell even anonymous. Usually via neverending greed or pride. We don't plan on retiring anytime soon, we've only just begun :)
How much do you make ?(give us a range ?) Is the money vs risk worth it ? Unfortunately we can't give you specifics on how much we earn however all of our profits have been used to enhance our platform. We take more pride in forming a true free market place rather than the dollars earned.
That's actually pretty cool, thanks. Oh also what made you want to get into this buisness? We love cryptocurrency, libertarianism, technology and saw an opportunity to make a free market place when SR was experiencing frequent down time.
Are you a regular customer at Atlantis yourself and what do/did you buy? We do everything on Atlantis except for buying products on it ;)
What is the craziest item you have ever sold? The top two items would be used sex toys/underwear (female vendor) and fig tree cuttings.
Fig tree cuttings? Can't someone just buy that on Ebay? O.o The ones from Atlantis are prettier.
How pure is the coke? It depends on the vendor. They advertise the purity on their product, the majority of it seems to be in the 85% range.
Why would the purity matter, and wouldn't someone prefer 100% pure over something that was cut with other items? Purity matters because you require less of the drug to get the same effect. Other than that it's mostly irrelevant. Yes, you would prefer 100% purity. 85% purity is very high compared to most street cocaine. On average, street cocaine is around 50% purity.
What exactly is usually put in cocaine other than coke to dilute the purity? Benzocaine, Caffeine, Phenacetin and sugars are the most common impurities.
Doesn't "CEO" relate to corporate organizational stucture? Why is a black market operating as a legal company would? We're still an organization and an organization requires leadership.
What's up with al the cats??? Incognito mode.
How much does your physical location matter to run a business like yours? Would it be any easieharder if you were in say, Somalia or on a ship in the ocean in International waters? We have team members in various different countries. I would say physical location is relatively irrelevant. We can access our systems from anywhere, and our location and the server location is protected by the Tor hidden service network.
Is there anything that you will not sell on your website? Restricted items.
(See exceptions below for exceptions to this rule).
Regarding the IT infrastructure, Do you own the servers that host the website? How are the servers connected to the internet? Is it a corporate leased line or just some dodgy hacked cable modem :) Without going to depth, we use dedicated servers provided by a hosting company. All servers are equipped with a 100Mbit WAN link.
I'm probably misunderstanding Tor a bit here then, but how come the hosting company doesn't get into hot water and told to stop hosting Atlantis? Tor traffic looks similar to SSL and our hosting provider doesn't snoop on our servers :-)
Do you pay for that in bitcoins? Is the server encrypted such that someone with physical access couldn't discover its contents, should they choose to? We pay for the servers via anonymous methods and the disks are encrypted. However when running certain applications, the vulnerable point would be RAM.
I'm not sure if the second is possible whilst also offering an internet service, you must have unencrypted stuff in RAM? We also monitor the data center for unauthorized access.
. To me hosting seems to be the weakest link in your personal security (I'm sure users are fine with your encrypted messages). Have you considered distributed hosting on other darknets like freenet? For all the services we offer, we have redundant servers ready to fail over to.
I hope i'm not late to the party, but do you have any thoughts/reactions towards the current chatter regarding PRISM and the NSA? Maybe you can talk about some precautions you took or are taking as a result? Never too late. It's quite scary actually. Tor, SSL, PGP, OTR, all of these technologies are your friends.
Although I will say this is nothing new, the NSA has been doing this for years now. I guess it's finally caught up to them.
We haven't started taking any new precautions as a result, we were already using them.
Would you say that those tools are your friends even if you're not interested in anything too illegal? Props for your efforts though, must be interesting to run that kind of company :) Definitely, with PRISM making headlines this week its always good to protect your privacy.
What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? I believe it's 11 meters per second.
Had anyone ever been caught in sting operation? We haven't had any incidents reported to us yet (most vendors are very careful and security conscious) however we have read a case in the past where a vendor was caught on a different market place. The market place wasn't to blame, it was just that the vendor wasn't careful with his operation and thus got discovered.
Whats a "virtual credit card"? Prepaid virtual credit cards aren't issued by a bank, have no contract, usually have a set amount and can be used online.
Can't access your site (yet) but do you have vendors in Australia? We have a few Australian vendors, yes.
You're probably not still around, but is it even possible to order items on your site from Japan? I have not even looked at Atlantis or SR because I don't think it's even possible. To my knowledge yes. But don't quote me on that. I think I remember seeing a few Japanese located vendors.
How does a typical black market starts up? For us, we love cryptocurrency, libertarianism, technology and saw an opportunity to make a free market place when SR was experiencing frequent down time.
When deciding for your brand or website name. What other names did you consider besides Atlantis? I like the name it has now just curious to know of the brainstorming behind the site. Also I love your website! Thank you! I can't actually remember any of the other names we considered, probably because they were all bad. Atlantis stuck from the beginning!
And you're welcome, thanks for using it.
